Hike in silence for art+science

Hikers from Warren Wilson College and local community

Hike on a trail within one hour’s drive of AS IF Center — at High Cove (100 acre forest where AS IF is located), on trails at nearby Penland School of Craft, in the Black Mountains/ South Toe area, at Roan Mountain, Grandfather Mountain, Linville Gorge, etc. Most walks will be 2-8 miles round trip, and easy to moderate unless otherwise noted.

We will walk in silence for the first half of the walk. The reason for the silence is to listen closely to the small sounds of the forest, to encourage wildlife sightings, and to focus our attention to natural history observations. There will be time to spend a few minutes drawings or writing in a nature journal, or taking photos to upload to iNaturalist or Nature’s Notebook,
or doing other art-science activities (but take only pictures, leave only footprints).

We’ll have a chance to chat while we break for a picnic lunch, and when we head back toward the trailhead after lunch.

Hikes take place mostly on Saturdays from 10am-2pm. Longer hikes will start earlier and stay later, for example hikes to Great Smoky Mountains National Park or Linville Gorge. Check the AS IF calendar to find out when hikes are scheduled. On the calendar, you can click on each event to open a pop up with more information.

BRING: water, lunch and snacks, rain gear, sketchbook for nature journaling and/or cell phone for uploading pix. Don’t bring pets.

RSVP is required.
