Art+science Hikes

Hikers from Warren Wilson College and local community on a trail at High Cove

Hike on a trail at AS IF Center or within one hours’ drive. Most walks will be 2-8 miles round trip, and easy to moderate unless otherwise noted.

We tend to stop a lot to ID plants, observe critters, and check out curiosities… so if you are a power hiker and want to maximize your mileage, this may not be your thing. For those who are interested in recording natural history observations, there will be time to pause along the trail. Some may spend a few minutes drawings or writing in a nature journal, taking photos to upload to iNaturalist or Nature’s Notebook, or doing other art-science activities.

Regularly scheduled hikes

  • Tuesdays 5:30-6:30pm on trails at Penland School of Craft
  • Saturdays 11am-2pm at High Cove (~100 acre forest where AS IF is located), or at Black Mountain Crest Trail in Burnsville

We will also schedule a few longer weekend hikes on trails an hour away such as Roan Mountain, Mt. Mitchell, Grandfather Mountain, or Linville Gorge… or to Great Smoky Mountains National Park two hours away.

BRING: water, lunch and snacks, rain gear (even if you don’t think you need it), sketchbook for nature journaling and/or cell phone for uploading pix. Please don’t bring pets.

Check the AS IF calendar to find out when hikes are scheduled. On the calendar, you can click on each event to open a pop up with more information.
